Up for auction is very rare set of four B&W photos of Jewish officers in the
Tel-Aviv Municipality Police (T.A.M.P)
C. 1921-1931, Palestine
This Police force was the 1
st
all-Jewish official law-enforcement government organization in the world!
In 1921, the British government granted Tel- Aviv autonomous municipal status with local by-laws which can be enforced by a municipal police force. The Tel-Aviv Municipality Police was made up of Jewish men from Tel-Aviv which were recruited by the head of the Tel Aviv Municipality Police,
Haim Alperin
(which can be seen setting in the large photo dressed in white). In 1927, an agreement was signed between the Tel Aviv Municipality and the British police headquarters, in which it was arranged that the British government would bear the expenses of the municipal police, which numbered 80 constables at that time. The uniforms of the police officers were quite identical to the British Mandate Police, except that instead of the Turkish style hat, the municipal police officers wore a visor cap with the emblem of the Tel Aviv police. On the shoulders were the metal insignia letters of T.A.M.P. [Tel Aviv Municipality Police] with a matching
belt buckle.
These police officers were patrolling the streets of the city doing duties of watch and ward and other normal police duties. The disbanding of the T.A.M.P force began in May 1948 when the British mandate in Palestine was terminated and the new Israeli Police Force was erected.
These photo capture a time and place in Jewish Police History in Palestine!
