The margins of the box feature hvy-duty, coarse thread stitching, clearly used to make this carrying bag, an extremely sturdy one that would withstand the rigors of long treks, temp fluctuations & battle. This was used by British military personnel & contained either a British military gun sight or compass, both used in accurately distancing the enemy & thus enabling the British troops to more accurately train their fire on the entrenched German troops at a distance before them. The leather box or carrying bag has a leather shoulder strap that has a prior mend. A piece of leather was affixed to the underside of the broken leather shoulder strap w/what was most likely rabbit skin glue. This was after all a military accessory & this damage would be understandable. A great WWI British military artifact.

antique military artifact. In really very well-preserved overall antique condition, with great color and surfaces. It remains undisturbed, untouched and as it was originally constituted, over 100 years ago. Think about our great-grandfathers, cold and huddled together in a vast network of dug trenches, awaiting death by mortar, cannon fire, bullet or mustard gas. This leather box, which has an enormously important story to tell for what it has endured and witnessed, would be hardly understandable today. Miraculous.
