antique tanned leather, military sight/compass hard box, with heavy, ornate, stamped double Celtic cross brass lid decoration. The margins of the box feature heavy-duty, coarse thread stitching, clearly used to make this carrying bag, an extremely sturdy one that would withstand the rigors of long treks, drastic temperature fluctuations and even battle. This was used by

military personnel and contained either a

military gun sight or a military compass, both used in accurately calibrating the distance of the enemy and thus enabling the

troops to more accurately train their fire on the entrenched German enemy troops at a distance in front of them and inflict the most damage. The leather box or carrying bag has a leather shoulder strap that has a previous mend. A piece of leather was affixed to the underside of the broken leather shoulder strap, with what was most likely rabbit skin glue. This was after all a military accessory and this damage would be understandable. A broken strap would have been quickly repaired to keep the sight bag in play and available in the field. A great

antique military artifact. In really very well-preserved overall antique condition, with great color and surfaces. It remains undisturbed, untouched and as it was originally constituted, over 100 years ago. Think about our great-grandfathers, cold and huddled together in a vast network of dug trenches, awaiting death by mortar, cannon fire, bullet or mustard gas. This leather box, which has an enormously important story to tell for what it has endured and witnessed, would be hardly understandable today. Miraculous.
CONDITION:
Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
