    Riedel Crystal has a long and storied history. Originally founded in Bohemia in 1673 by German speaking Bohemians the the company went through seven generations of Riedel patriarchs before World War II. During WWII the Reich took over the factories.
    The modern Riedel Corporation was founded by CLAUS J. RIEDEL. A veteran of WWII, he had been captured by Allied forces in Italy, and was a prisoner of war. In 1945 Claus was being repatriated to Germany, as a Bohemian - alas a Czechoslovakian, and knowing there was no industry in Germany, he jumped the train as it entered Austria and soon found the a friend he had studied engineering with, the son Daniel Swarovski. The Riedel and Swarovski families had been friendly for four generations, grandfathers and great grandfathers had apprenticed between the families.
    Claus worked as a glass blower and cutter for the Swarovski family until 1955, and eventually Daniel and Claus took over an unused Swrovski factory to rebuild the historic Riedel name.
